MENTAL HEALTH IN THE TIME OF COVID

Since 2020 the world has been living in the fear of a virus – the one which spreads like fire! As human beings it is natural for us to fear, worry and stress about perceived or real threats, and in the context of COVID-19 pandemic, experiencing these is normal and understandable. So, if you think you are experiencing fear, stress, worry or you are more anxious than usual then go easy on yourself. Remember, the world is with you!

The uncertainty surrounding the virus and its multiple mutations is probably one of the hardest thing to handle. Here are some ways in which you may be able to get through this stressful period –

  • stay informed – but wisely ! stick to trustworthy sources, do not check for updates obsessively, step away from media if you feel overwhelmed and be mindful of what you are sharing

  • focus on things that you can control – you cannot control the outbreak, but you surely can manage certain things around you to minimize the risk. For example, wash your hands frequently, venture out only when necessary, avoid non-essential travel, avoid large gatherings, and of course wear the mask!

  • stay connected with people you care – do this through regular phone calls, chat or video conferencing – this will act like a vitamin doze to your mental health

  • stay fit physically and spiritually – create a routine for yourself, take time out for activities that you enjoy, exercise

  • get help if you feel the need – talk to a therapist if you really need to, it’s always good to lean on to a professional who can help you cope with all the stress that this pandemic has brought with it!

Hope these quick tips will at least help you to start thinking about your mental health in these trying times and enable you to take those tiny steps towards your mental health needs.
